What are the Drawbacks of Using iPage?

No web hosting service is perfect, but some disadvantages are worse than others. When choosing a web hosting provider, it can be immensely helpful to review your options and to determine whether you’re able to handle the drawbacks of a particular service.

If you are currently considering iPage as an option, then you are probably enamored with the advantages. iPage is cheap, it’s simple, and there are many freebies when you sign up. While those are certainly great features for any web hosting service, there are also some disadvantages that you should be aware of. Here are a few of them:

No Upgrade

ipage-problemsMost website owners purchase a web hosting service with the intent to expand at some point. With iPage, expansion is pretty limited since iPage only offers one service without any upgrades. Therefore, if your website outgrows the current plan, then you will need to look for a different web hosting service.

Contractual Obligations

Not only does iPage not have any upgrades, but the web hosting service also requires you to commit to them for a year. The relationship can be a bumpy one, especially because there have been numerous complaints regarding iPage’s customer service (or lack thereof).

A Hike in Fees

hike feesiPage markets itself as an affordable web hosting service. For most users though, the affordability only lasts for the first 12 months of the service. After the 12 months are up, you will be faced with higher renewal fees.

High Traffic Websites are Not Welcome

problemsCertain web hosting services are designed for high traffic websites, but iPage isn’t one of them. iPage has the ability to suspend your account if it believes that your website is taking advantage of the server’s resources, i.e. your website is receiving an unusually high volume of traffic. Thus, if you plan on having an extremely popular website, it’s best to use a web hosting service where your success is welcome.

Slow Speeds and Downtime

speedsThe absolute worst disadvantage of iPage is that many users have experienced slow speeds and downtime. Unlike other webhosting services, iPage does not offer an uptime guarantee. This means that you will be required to either cancel the service within the 30-day trial period or live through 12 months of potential website slowness and downtime. Any seasoned website owner knows that those factors virtually destroy a website’s success.

If it is any conciliation, iPage is currently trying to expand the size of its server and is in the process of adding data centers. These changes will hopefully cure the downtime issue so you can feel confident that you are getting the quality service that you signed up for. For now, do not bother contacting customer support about your issue – they have been recognized as pretty unreliable, too.
